inspiration: today

It's about time to open the shutters and blow the dust off the work table!

The studio looks so sad and forlorn and this blog so quiet that I think it could really do with a dose of beautiful happy things! If all goes well, I hope to be back with my pretties in a week or two!

my inspiration, today :)

mommy talk

Oh my I can't believe the little man is nearly 3 months old! Time sure vanishes when you're a full time mommy to a wriggling tot! Most days I feel like tearing my hair out and swear he'll be my only child, other days his cheeky grin and cute chuckles make my heart melt and I forget all the hours of crying he's put me through on the bad days. I really truly deeply have newfound respect for stay home mommies cos this is the singular toughest thing I've had to take on so far and I'm still far from getting into the swing of things!

It was of cos wonderful to have grandparents around to share their experience and make you feel less of a loser, not to mention babysit sometimes so Matt and I can have the occasional evening off! Here we are at a family lunch with both sets of grandparents and two uncles who still haven't the guts to carry the little one! They think he looks too fragile!

And to all the amazing mommies out there, happy mothers' day!
God bless you for the unceasing selfless love you show us all :)

2 months later....

Can you believe the little tot is nearly 2months old? Time sure flies when you're nursing and changing nappies all day long! He is just starting to sleep through the night (7-8 hrs) but that also means he DOESN'T nap in the day which equates zero time to fiddle with beads. The in-laws are visiting from England which is wonderful cos they have sooo much experience with kids and I feel much more confident now with Nathan after picking up tips from them.

I've learnt some things in the past 2 months which tells you that your life is never gonna be the same:

1) Getting peed and pooed on is now a daily routine. Not funny.
2) You learn to eat/ shower/ use the loo at superman speed.
3) Having the baby sleep through the night is good for daddy but mommy still has to wake at 4am to pump her rock hard engorged mammaries.
4) You start planning shopping trips and nice meals around places with nursing room facilities.
5) Goodbye small clutches. Hello huge diaper bags!
6) Gone are the days of romantic vacations for two. You'll be lucky to even be able to have a few hours off without having to worry about the kiddo!

These are all but trivial stuff of cos :)
Here are some pictures on how Nate's been growing!

Xin, this is for you!!

(I still have 6kg to lose!!)

and finally... my favourite part of being a mommy :)

Our miracle baby boy

When I was 4 months pregnant, my blood test indicated that our baby boy had a 1:66 chance of having Down Syndrome. Though it is only a screening test and not 100% accurate, we were still taken aback by the result considering that the average risk statistic for my age was about 1:600. My doctor was naturally very concerned and advised that we do an amniocentesis (a diagnostic test) to find out for sure. With the knowledge would come the inevitable decision of whether to continue or terminate the pregnancy. Anxiety overtook us the Saturday that we received this news (you know it's bad when you just had your blood taken on Friday and your doctor rings on Saturday morning) so we scheduled our amnio for the following Tuesday.

I don't remember much of that weekend except both of us were so overwhelmed that we hugged together and wept. And especially so after we found out that the risk of miscarriage while having an amnio done was the same as our baby having Downs. Being first time parents, we were at a total loss of what to do and could only pray. We spoke to close friends who prayed with us and for us and finally we decided that it was far worse for us to lose our baby boy, our blessing from above. If God so chose that our little one would have special needs, He must have a purpose for this and He would help us through it. We decided to trust God and cancel the amniocentesis.

On Monday before we could ring the clinic to cancel the procedure, we received a call from them instead asking if we'd forgotten our appointment that day to have the amnio done. Turns out there was a mix-up and the laboratory had mistaken our appointment for Monday instead of Tuesday! That was the affirmation we needed! Even though we had made our minds up, it took a long time for me to really come to peace with it cos there would always be a nagging thought at the back of my head going, "What if...?" But God is gracious! Through the next few months He constantly assured me that everything was in His hands and I was eventually able to let go and rejoice as my due date drew nearer.

And of course there was my clumsy fall on rainy Christmas Eve followed by the unfortunate car accident 3 days before the end of 2008, so yep it's a miracle our Nathan made it at all! He is a real toughie! To top it off, there was no sign of labour for a long long long long time. Our sweet pro-natural doctor was willing to let us wait it out since I had no health problems but I was getting increasingly stressed as I did not want to have labour induced. I kept asking God, "When??'" But He had already heard our prayers. Exactly 1 week past my due date on the day I had my gynae's appointment, my mucous plug came out in the morning and as I reached the doctor's clinic, my waterbag burst. Very messy indeed! As I was only 1.5cm dilated then, he said labour might still take a while to begin so I would probably have to go to the hospital the same day to induce labour in case of infection.

We decided to go home first cos we had been praying for labour to start naturally and a clear sign of when to go into hospital. We didn't have to wait long! By the time we got home, contractions began and by 3pm they were lasting 1min long at 4min apart. When we got to the hospital at 3.30pm, I was 4cm dilated. The nurse said I had gone in too early and would be there a long time but we knew otherwise. Within 4 hours I was fully dilated and pushing! Pushing did take a long time though cos I was so exhausted they had to give me milo to sip in between contractions!

On Feb 20, after much tears and joy, our bundle of joy finally arrived at the very timely hour of 21:21. He is a real darling and even though sometimes it's so hard to deal with the crying (i'm still fairly clueless!) and breastfeeding (not as easy as it sounds), everyday I thank God that Nathan is here with me, healthy and well. I would have given up anything just for him to be safe. And maybe that's what being a mommy is all about.

Hello baby boy, we're so glad you're finally here with us :)

Hello world!

Hello I'm the latest addition to the Challenger family that's been keeping mummy and daddy very very busy so please bear with us we're still getting used to each other! I'm a bit of a guzzler at the moment so mummy feels like she's a cow on 24 hr standby with very sore udders. She's still learning to interpret my many cries and sometimes pulls her hair in frustration when I refuse to sleep. But I know she loves me very much and finds it hilarious whenever I get a hiccup attack. Daddy is the man when it comes to changing my nappies and he's really sweet to give mummy foot massages when she has to nurse me at night. I'll be 1 month old next weekend so that'll be fun cos I'll get to terrorise oops no i meant see the rest of this world finally!

Still in the mood for love

How did you spend your Valentine's?
We have never been the couple to celebrate Valentine's, and even more so now that we are still eagerly awaiting the little one's arrival! (Which reminds me yes, I am now officially 3 days past my due date and the belly is stretched popiah-skin thin but no baby in sight yet! Oh boy. The water retention's a killer.) The hubster took out my favourite warm chocolate lava cake, added a scoop of chocolate ben and jerry's, topped it with delish strawberries and voila! He captured my heart all over again.

We spent the rest of the evening holding hands under the duvet on our loungy chairs and watching the story of why Jane Austen never got married and how Miss Beatrix Potter lost her fiance but found love again eventually. How romantic. And cheesy haha.

Willow Frond - SGD 45 (only pair) - Sold

The belly is now 37 weeks so not long now! He's not a small baby so we're psyching up for his arrival anytime. We've been pretty occupied with sorting out the nursery and couldn't be more pleased that the long-awaited cot finally turned up!! For a while we thought he might have to fit in our chest of drawers haha. And then came days of baby laundering ~ our weekends were burnt just washing and ironing and reorganizing the kitchen for bottles and other baby equipment. It was so adorable seeing the little booties and rompers hanging out to dry that it made up for all that time spent doing laundry :)

Sadly I've had to stop playing with my beads cos the belly's too big and uncomfortable to fit at the work desk. It doesn't help that the minute I sit there, he keeps squirming nonstop until I have to go lie down. But thankfully I was able to squeeze out pockets of time here and there so here are some new earrings just in time for Chinese New Year! They are all specially priced at $45 for the festive season :)
