Still haven't quite grasped the concept of 2012 yet, has time really passed that quick?! This is a quick hello post to say yes I am still alive, no I'm not pregnant again (two is a handful thank you very much), and yes I know this blog is looking awfully forlorn so updates will be forthcoming swiftly. Mr Oriental Rose bought me a new Olympus Pen so I took some test shots of my work space. It's pretty amazing! Can't imagine what my pictures will be like if I mastered it properly. If only reading the camera manual was higher up on my to-do list.

I had a few completed necklaces which I originally planned to release before Christmas but clearly they never quite made it. Photos are up on my Flickr album and will be listed by tomorrow. A couple more CNY-appropriate festive earrings are also awaiting their photo shoot and I plan to ensure they get their appearance in time, this time!

This is another of my new convertible pieces - the chain portion can be removed to form a simple Y-necklace 18" long with the longish dew drop chalcedony pendant (on right, drop length is about 2.75") while you get the option of a fancy bracelet. One of my favourite creations ever :)

One swell thing about growing older is that you start to learn what works for your body shape and what to avoid like crazy. While I love how the 50s silhouette of a nipped waist flatters the female form, the full skirt look tends to look funny on me so I veer away from them generally. The other great 50s look however, however, is an entirely different story! The bombshell wiggle dresses create curves where there were previously none and just have that magic of making you feel pin-up worthy.

Sometimes all your less-than-toned-post-baby body needs to feel good about itself is a simple well-tailored outfit! Hubba hubba!

Inspired by my 1920s art deco rose motif necklace collection, I was thrilled to find this realistic vintage-repro rose charm (which looked like the genuine one in an antique necklace of mine!) since it is not always that one stumbles upon similar looking parts almost a century later. This piece is modeled on the popular classic style of the day.

To further authenticate the period flavour, I used cotton candy pink japanese glass beads similar in colour and make to the kind of czech glass beads which would have been used in those days. Filigrees were de rigeur so they make their appearance here as well. Enjoy this blast from the past!

A little surprise comes in the form of a sterling book style locket with a detachable cz-encrusted bail so it can be removed and worn alone on the (surprise again!) sterling chain that is also detachable from the main necklace itself.

Turning 29

So I turned a year older in September.

As the years pass, this day no longer feels different from any other day. I get up at dawn as usual, nurse the daughter, slide back into bed with the son for an hour before the usual morning rush begins. Nothing special apart from reading in the papers about MM Lee's 88th birthday (yes we share the same birthday, just 59 years apart!), and of course the fact that I get to open my presents in bed with the Mr and kiddies and be smothered with wet kisses :)

I contemplated for a while before putting my real age down cos you know, like all women we have our funny quirks and being reluctant about revealing my age is one of mine. I suspect the fact that most of my friends are older than I am has made me more sensitive about not mentioning my under-30 status so they don't feel too old! Haha! (ok that was a joke girls)

Looking back at the past 29 years, I can't help but feel humbled and grateful for the Lord's grace and blessings and favour! I have loving, supportive parents, amazing younger brothers (who help to babysit and change nappies!), survived Singapore's arduous education system, made some awesome lifelong friends, met the love of my life at 23, married him at 24, had our dear son at 26, followed by another sweet daughter at 28... seriously this is a fairytale turned reality for me.

So what did we do for my special day?

The Hubster made plans that afternoon for a lovely, cosy date over high tea at The Landing Point, Fullerton Bay Hotel.

This is what I wore:

I know! How rare to have an outfit post! I'd always wanted to share a bit of how I mix vintage into my wardrobe and all but am always too self-conscious to put up pictures. Birthdays have a knack of making you throw caution to the wind though.

Ah my Nadinoo dress. I'd been saving it for a special occasion and birthdays definitely qualify. I can't begin to gush on how pretty Nadinoo's dainty frocks are and how in love I am with them. That would probably take up another blog post entirely. Here I am with the Hubster's birthday present to me - a Fossil leather watch - as well as my favourite antique sterling filigree and pale green glass ring and a vintage wicker bag from Granny's Day Out.

The next day I woke up to a wonderful surprise by our good friends who had schemed with the Mister (he's a conspiratorial one) to whip up a birthday breakfast for me. There were pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon, sauteed mushrooms, strawberries, kiwis, juice... the works!

And then lunch at Epicurious, Robertson Quay. Yes we could still eat, and boy was it a stuffy day!

Inspired by the fascinating world of ancient Greco-Roman culture, here is a sumptuous show-stopper of a necklace lavished in classical elegance.

This amazing cameo brooch pin has the portrait of a regal Roman lady carved in hematite or its costume version (hematine). I sourced it along with some other cool finds at Port Adelaide's Antiques Market (the first thing the somewhat ancient granny behind the booth said to me was this was a very very old piece though she didn't specify how old!) The cameo is set in an ornate intricately filigreed frame with a high relief and is surrounded by turquoise and pearl accents. A stunning relic from the past!

AAA grade deep blue lapis lazuli with gold flecks and moonstone rondelles are hand-linked alongside gorgeous large fresh water pearls, petite black agate barrels and robin-blue faux turquoise nuggets. Lace rose motif in midnight noir, vintage medium vitrail crystal with moonstone briolettes and their brilliant flashes. The shortest strand measures approx. 19" long with the longest strand at 27". Toggle closure at side. 14k gold-filled components.

I am gonna call this the AW 11 Collection - Part Une cos seriously I still have got tons of ideas I can't translate into actual pieces fast enough. Reckon that means I can afford to come up with a Part Deux and a Part Trois perhaps. Not to mention a kind soul just recently reminded me about earrings! How could I have forgotten the earrings?!! So you see, a Part Deux is indispensable...

Still have loads more to do and if you noticed, the blog is undergoing a revamp as we speak. It is far from finished but I am so sick of staring at the screen and my fingers are screaming, enough!!! I am now going to take a nice cold shower, have some corn pops with coffee milk and then play with the baby girl. I hope you enjoy the gloriously sweltering day today too!

So now you know! The theme for this AW 11 collection is "Antiquarian".

Apart from very old jewellery, my other great love is very old books. Or specifically reading about collecting and dealing in old, rare, antiquarian books. The love affair began many moons ago while working as a bookseller.

Like every college student then, I was keen to find a holiday job for extra cash. I loved reading so I knew I wanted to work in a bookshop. The biggest two at that time were the now-defunct Borders at Wheelock Place or Kinokuniya at Ngee Ann City. The remuneration was comparable, but Kinokuniya required the wear of a uniform (which a 18 year old me considered stuffy) so the choice was easy.

Though it was a very short stint, I think having had a foretaste of the intricate workings of the back room, having to actually know the genres and content of the books I was selling, seeing and smelling the crisp printed pages of new arrivals everyday -- the experience left such an indelible impression on me.

Some books I picked up then have impacted me over the years (and influenced my creative mood this season!) and these are 2 of them:

I am not a student of literature so David Denby's adventures of his encounters with Columbia University's famous "Great Books" course as an older student left me curious about the classics of western civilisation written essentially by what is termed "dead white males" (funny!). A fascinating novel take on the great books canon but oh so heavy.

Thankfully this book is much lighter:

The book is a collection of letters chronicling the 20 year correspondence between Helene Hanff, a gregarious irreverent American writer, and Frank Doel, a British antiquarian bookseller (mighty fine example of the typical reticent staid English gentleman if I may add). It is witty, sarcastic, sweet, sad and nostalgic all at once. One of my favourite reads ever!

If you have never read 84 Charing Cross before, please please please pick up a copy somewhere and read it. Find a cosy corner, have a cuppa tea and spend the afternoon relishing the story of a charming, old-fashioned friendship in a much simpler time.... xo

Love the sun today! I finally got down to doing the photo-shoot for the new AW 11 collection that I've been hard at work on. Only minor editing to the lighting was needed, and the pictures turned out soft and dreamy with a somewhat languid feel. I like!

A photography buff/expert I am not, so I know nuts about "photo boxes", "light tents" and the like. My camera is a point and shoot Canon Ixus and the daytime sun is my best friend. I double up the wooden bench next to our shoe cupboard as my photo-shoot table top along with rustic white washed drawers/display cabinet and paper flowers as props. It really is quite fun playing decorate, creating little vignettes of jewels as product shots. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do :)

All I have to do now is choose the prettiest and most defining photos as well as come up with the copy (promotional text, not duplicate) for each of the pieces and then they will be ready for listing. Give me another few days or so?

We sure did!

As you can see, the dreary rains did not dampen our spirits one bit as we decked out in cheery colours and trooped down to Mac's for breakfast with the kiddies and family. Sarah loved chewing on her orange happy meal balloon while we lost Nathan for a bit to the iphone (oh dear me). Hope you are having a lovely start to September! I am really excited cos after a year of waiting, my birthday finally arrives this month! Haha...

I wish I had more photos to show you but to be honest, the studio is heading progressively and rapidly towards the chaotic end of the organized chaos spectrum. Nevertheless I'm pleased to welcome Miss Bessie to the studio, a dainty mannequin who you will see quite often in future photo shoots. Ain't she a dame! I know lots of folks are curious and wondering when new pieces will be listed. I'm so sorry for keeping you in suspense! The last few weeks have been trying to say the least -- instead of the kids falling sick, it's the adults who are taking turns to drop like flies! (moi excluded, thank you immune system) For a while, I really felt down in the doldrums what with the lack of sleep, stress from feeding a fussy baby (she doesn't like sweet stuff - so milk cereal is a no NO. Strange kid.), a challenging preschooler (whose latest catch phrases include "i don't want!", "i don't like!", "fine!"), a sick hubby, a sick helper, a sick grandma.... Thank God that His mercies are new everyday cos just as I wanna scream and give up, something comes through and makes it all better :)

Among other news, we are also proud to have finally:

1) kicked the daughter out of our room into her temporary cot room cum work studio till she's older, sleeping better and able to share her brother's ginormous space upstairs

2) cleared the boxes which have been sitting around from last Nov so the studio is at least presentable - you can see the floor now!

Unlike messy old me, the mister is a house-proud fella who couldn't be happier that the worst room in the house is now a tidy spot and is continuing his rampage through the rest of the house to make them every more cozy and er, minimalistic. Toys and random stuff strewn around? No way jose!

This studio has been a long time in the making and though it's far from perfect, I'm just so glad for this little oasis of muse and inspiration! I can quietly tool away while the daughter is napping on the studio couch or take a break to caress my collection of jewels and knick knacks and of course the dresses! Vintage frocks all a happy alongside the vintage bags.

Guess who's a happy girl now? :)

A photo booth story

Here I am trying to get a decent photo of the young lady for her first passport.

And as all parents would know, babies make the worst photo shoot models!!

How do you get a child to

a) look straight into the camera so her eyes, eyebrows and other facial features are obvious

b) without some sort of grimace/ funny face / hands flapping about

c) with agreeable lighting conditions so there will be no shadows?

It took 2 days of trying + whole lot more of coaxing + a frustrating 2 hour attempt of wonky online application (which failed) + another 10 minutes of calling the helpline (which merely told me to send an email to their IT help desk) + 3 days of waiting for the IT help desk's reply. Not the best week of my life for sure.

But here we are! We survived the gauntlet and the long-awaited red passport is now ready for collection. In case you were wondering, both Nathan and Sarah are full-fledged Singapore citizens. Here is my contribution to nation-building -- a "foreign-talent" engineer hubby and 2 little cute hybrids to boost the declining birth rate :)

All these pieces here were sold in the blink of an eye, thank you so much! I feel incredibly blessed to have such wonderful support, it really spurs me on to keep persevering despite the naysaying voices in my head!

Sometimes I wonder if I should look at this endeavour as a "professional venture" when in all honesty I know I don't. In this season of my life, my primary role and focus is wife, mother, homemaker. If my kids fall sick, if the larder needs replenishing, if overseas friends come to visit, I instinctively and unquestioningly take time away from the workroom to do what needs to be done. And surely you don't do that if it's some kind of "official" or "professional" job?

Not to say I don't enjoy my time in the studio, oh I love just hanging around there! It gives me great satisfaction and immense enjoyment and I wish I were more able to juggle my time wisely so I wouldn't feel this dissatisfied from being pulled away by daily obligations. Perhaps the lesson I need to learn is to not let what I do determine my self-worth, or let myself be subject to the world's definition of success. There is nothing embarrassing about being a stay home mom and not having to go back to a regular job. So why do I still hesitate in replying when people ask what I do?

I love seed pearls in my old jewellery and you already know my not-so-closet obsession with our winged friends so when I stumbled upon this pretty on Ebay last year I couldn't resist it. Thankfully no one bidded ferociously against me for it so it's now one of my prized possessions! I haven't quite seen the likes of an antique 10k gold amethyst and seed pearl birdies necklace like it since then so I guess this was quite the find! You wouldn't believe the price I paid for it too. Work is slow as the daughter is reaching a needy phase - sometimes it frustrates me to be wanted so much though I quickly reflect and know it is really a blessing to be loved! One day she is going to prefer hanging out with her friends then spending time with mama. I just have to learn to give up my own selfish desires with what I think is "my time" and appreciate the moments I have with my sweet baby who needs me. Dying to self is a lesson I have to learn everyday!

Took these photos for a really thoughtful hubby looking for a birthday gift for his wife to put pictures of their bub in. How sweet is that! Eventually he chose one from a different set - a pretty heart-shaped cameo locket - which I think makes a wonderful gift for a new mom!

Going through my jewellery chest (it's no longer just a box or two) made me realize just how many amazing pieces I have and that I really need to make sure none of them feels left out and neglected. The above lockets are but a few from my own collection, I haven't photographed those that I love and wear a lot cos I don't wanna disappoint folks with tantalizing pictures of pieces that ain't available! I do love vintage filigree rings! Do you? These art deco rings are getting harder to find
so thankfully I have amassed quite a few and I am sharing one here.

A pretty 1920s costume ring featuring an emerald cut golden honey-hued plastic stone. The ring setting is plated base metal with a decorative floral filigreed pattern round the band. The faceted glass-like stone has a beautiful crown and pavilion held in place with 6 prongs. There is some plating loss and light scuffing to the plastic stone commensurate with age but overall condition is still wonderful. It looks just as amazing today as when it was first made in the speakeasy era! SGD 89.

Hello lovelies! I have been working on making new pieces for the blog which has become rather lonely in my long absence - here are some sneaks of things to come! After much consideration, I have decided that it is time to streamline the closet so I will be releasing (online) vintage and new dresses and of course antique jewellery from my personal collection! I have more than 50 vintage frocks alone, not to mention contemporary dresses and the trinkets. There are some 40s rayon, some 50s waisted and an Estevez, among others. It is quite insane my closet is so packed it's bursting and I can't wear half the stuff since having 2 babies. If you are about a UK size 8-10, love vintage, love jewellery and wanna come by to see them in person, I will release more information on how you can do that if you drop me an email. Which means I need to sort the stash out asap!

Has it really been 2 months since I last blogged? By golly! I must have been so consumed by domesticities to have neglected this blog for so long! Being at home most of the time has rekindled my interest in cooking and baking so yes, I think the term "domesticities" is well-qualified here.

Being a mother of 2 is a whole new ball game. New home, new baby, new school, new habits, new routines, new messiness... The funny thing is I'm actually enjoying every moment of it! It isn't always all fun though, we had 2 sick kiddies and a sick Daddy for a long while but everyone is now well and kicking again - hooray! Right now I'm hoping to get the littlest member to entertain herself for a bit so I can finally pick up those pliers and work those trinkets again :)

It was our first time out soooo late with the kiddies, by the time we got everyone in bed it was nearly midnight. Needless to say the entire family was pretty much concussed the day after as well. Still we were of very happy to be part of the day's celebration after having watched the devoted couple (my stunning cousin and her dashing hubby) date for a staggering 12 years! Watching their wedding montage of pictures taken in their old school uniforms - I'm pretty sure they got new ones in a larger size - and in their old school compound nonetheless brought me seriously close to tears. How rare and how sweet to marry your first love!

I have the sweetest baby at home.
Her name is Sarah Emma and she's now 3 months old.

She is such a bundle of giggles and smiles I wanna kiss her all the time.

Some days she looks so cute and does silly things she cracks me up.

Other days she makes me wanna cry.

And sometimes she looks so much like her brother I feel odd dolling her up in a dress!
I am already thinking of making baby jewels for her :)

Sorry if things have been a bit slow on this side, I am busy with fitting work in round her fitful snatches of cat naps. Drives me nuts taking all those time to put her down only to have her wake barely 30min later. And she still wakes every 2 hours at night like clockwork, even if not to feed. What is it with my children who don't seem to like sleeping very much?? Clearly they did not inherit that trait from me.

There is a large round mother of pearl disc with a lovely bunch of topaz blooms in varying petal arrangements, floral faux pearl accents and enamel feathery leaves in a neutral shade of camel. A lone aged brass swallow has made this gorgeous nest its own and hidden a beautiful large olive topaz briolette in it. A classic black and gold ensemble with a vintage Art Noveau pendant. This lovely pendant has a black lucite cabochon with gold flakes set in a crown-like gilded frame surrounded by hearts and leaves. I'm sorry it's taken me 2 months to get back to blogging, is a new baby good excuse enough?

Juggling 2 very young kids is not very fun, especially with twice the sleep deprivation!

Just last night, the babe spent an hour and a half in the evening crying from colic, fell asleep at 6pm, woke at 7pm, didn't sleep again till 930pm, woke at 12midnight, was put down at 1am, woke at 2am, put down again at 3am.... and after that I lost track of what time it was. Or what day it was.

Thankfully her brother is now in preschool although the major changes of moving home, having a new sibling and starting school have brought back the night wakings with a vengeance so the hubster and I barely see each other in the nights anymore. SIGH. So we came up with 2 mottoes or rather reminders to help keep our sanity when the going gets tough:

1) This too shall pass

2) Eventually they all grow up

Doesn't help with the exhaustion but humour always makes us feel better! :p

This is such an adorable quirky owl piece!

Mr Percy Potter is the geeky owl in question with his ruby red eyes and big studious glasses. He is approx. 1 1/4" tall and marked Coventry at the back (for Sarah Coventry) which makes him such a collectible too! Also features a vintage aurora borealis rainbow rivoli earring component, brassy twig and burgundy swarovski wreath charms as well as a pretty faceted ruby briolette. Our baby girl is now 2 weeks old and after an eventful labour and rocky start to the 1st week of her life (she was hospitalized for a high fever and infection), we are happily settling down in our new home with a new baby and looking forward to Christmas! Do you have any fancy plans for this season yet?

I have loads to share but for now, my days are spent nursing a very very hungry baby and changing lots of poopy diapers. And of cos trying to spend as much time as I can with a little boy approaching the terrible twos and getting needy from having a new sibling at home. Very exciting. So please bear with me while life gets a move on and I will have some new surprises here very soon! :)
