I’m happy to share with you news of our big event in aid of Moving Images – The Substation’s year-round film programme dedicated to nurturing the film medium as an art form and filmmakers as creators.

As you may know, many people like you have faithfully supported Moving Images since it started in 1997 - almost 10 years ago. You have seen how we helped to foster the growth of the Singapore film scene, promoting local and alternative film, nurturing young filmmakers like Wee Li Lin, Royston Tan, Tania Sng, Sherman Ong, Tan Pin Pin, Sun Koh, and more. Moving Images grew to make an impact on the region – today, programmes like the Asian Film Symposium attract entries and visiting filmmakers and curators from around Asia. Moving Images is a platform where filmmakers from around Asia and Singapore connect. It is also where you, our audience, can see exciting new works by local filmmakers – every month, and for free!

I am appealing to you to help us keep Moving Images going strong (and hold more free screenings), by supporting the Charity Film Screening of the award-winning Spanish film “Take My Eyes” on 24 November 2006 at GV Vivocity. This charity event is co-organised by The Substation and the National Committee for UNIFEM Singapore.
Each year, Moving Images needs to raise $40,000 in sponsorship, donations and ticket revenues, on top of our annual funding from the Singapore Film Commission. You can help us by making a donation of $100 or $200, for a ticket to the Charity Film Gala. Each ticket purchased enables you to enjoy a double tax exemption as well.

By doing so, you will also help women in need. Proceeds from the Charity Film Gala will be shared with UNIFEM Singapore (United Nations Development Fund for Women Singapore), who will use it to organize workshops on self-worth and financial literacy for women in shelters, and for an education project in the Mekong region on the sad and serious problem of trafficking of women and children.

Should you be unable to come, your ticket can be given to women from the shelters to benefit from the event too!

At The Substation, we believe that each individual has the potential to change the world for the better.

All it requires is for each of us to take action. It doesn’t take much. Pick up the phone and call us at 6337 7535 to reserve tickets, or request for a ticket order form by email: admin@substation.org.

For more details, contact Audrey, Julie or Kristin at 6337 7535.

Thank you and we hope to see you on 24th November 2006 at GV Vivocity.

Sweet November

Man, it's been a rough weekend cos Matt has been down with the flu so I've had to cook for him during this time (and we all know what a terrible klutz I am in the kitchen!!) . Nevertheless I have to thank God that I did not burn down our kitchen and on the contrary, some really good comfort food like macaronic soup and japanese curry came out of this culinary experiment!! (or so Matt says ... I think the bug screwed his taste buds). Anyway I caught the flu bug myself on Sunday and have been in this self-pitying-oh-i'm-dying mood since haaaa.

I'm feeling slightly better today so ta-dah! All the pieces I've yet to post up are now here! Still in my gold & bling phase cos all that tinsel and lights along Orchard just make you see drama glamour wherever you go!! Was also well enough to pick up this gorgeous pair of Antoinette earrings by designer Lynn from Antidote yesterday and had the most wonderful chat with Steph, the stunning owner of this funky cart and boy, do we have loads in common!! I really love Antidote's accessories and mosaic candle holders and I'm eyeing a mosaic mirror by Nanette Zehnder for our new home! Love the homeliness of her pieces! :) Steph's got a great eye for funky stuff and if you've seen her bright and cheery cart at Raffles City, you'll agree with me too!

And oh, just to give you a head's up - Maki Squarepatch (and Maad) will be at the Dhoby Ghaut atrium JUST this weekend (25-26 Nov) and at the Takashimaya forum on 9-10, 16-17 Dec. Be sure to check them out if you're in the area!

Last thing I wanna say here is... check out the pictures taken at Chris' tea party!! I feel hungry just looking her goodies again heh ~ Her Christmas menu will be up real soon and I'd be sure to let all you hungry folks abt it too!
Enjoy the luxury of guilt-free pigging out this festive season (if not now, then when?!!) and I'll catch ya later soon!! :)

Of Roast and Yorkshire Pudding!

Yesterday was a most lovely Sunday with lotsa sunshine, good food and naps! Goodness knows how much I've been craving sleep, especially after a particularly exhausting Saturday ~ The wedding at Merchant Court Swissotel was so classic and filled with so much love and sincerity and good wishes that I truly felt touched by it all. The bride looked simply divine while the groom has never looked smarter in his uniform (yes he's in the service). I'm so happy for the new couple!! :) Perfect timing too, their wedding was my check list of sorts haaaa now I know I'm not even halfway through!!! *cold sweat*

Later the same day I happily dragged Matt fr the wedding to my uni's sports club mgmt comm, boy it's been AGES since we last met!!! Everyone looked the same, just minus the kiddy air that surrounds all undergrads haha. I keep forgetting that I haven't seen some pple in a long time and that the existence of Matt alone is quite big news! It was just so nice chatting and catching up over ramen and hearing all sorts of stories ~ some things never change, for one we've not lost our eagerness for "updates" :)

It's truly been an eventful weekend, and more so now that our new house is nearly ready for us to move in January. The clan will be slowly making their way to tropical Singapore so we really need to get the house painted and sorted soon! Despite all that planning, I can't wait to take a breather and head out with the hubster to get our first tree tgt and decorate our home with tinsel and everything that reminds him of the wintry Christmas at home. It's the first time in his life spending Christmas away and we hope that this Christmas will be the start of our own traditions as a new family!! (it's gonna be lotsa food and turkey and roast and yorkshire pudding and candies!!! Can feel the weight piling on just thinking abt it)

Yay! Christmas here we come!! :)

Girls' Night Out!

Had a gorgeous time last night catching up with my Lao sisters ~ we miss you Char!! Can't wait to see you at Christmas!! We celebrated Lee En's belated birthday (she's an Oct baby) cos she was away during her birthday. Guess what we got as a cake for her? Chris' pretty chocolate banana cupcake naturally! I'd packed 2 brown bags of cookies and a cupcake each for Eileen and Lee En so they can share the calories with me *muahahaha* Lotsa catching up over tea and yummy food, reminds me of the days we used to meet at the arts or science canteen and oh Dome at UCC!! Our fave haunts. Those were the carefree days ~ but we're very blessed that all of us are in a job that we enjoy so life is good!

Haha and yes, we had to take pictures with our maki squarepatch goodies :p Can you believe we were fighting over Eileen's new flat dolly during dinner? Matt was upset that he had to give up his (temporary) possession of the dolly #2 and kept pouting for one more hahahaha. Enqi & Xin, if you're reading this, more flat dollies pls!! And moi showing off my new teddy bag of cos ~

Next night out: a PJ party!! (so lee en can parade her pressie from us hehe)

The funky and the lovely

Ooh look at my latest acquisitions! Picked up my very own funky teddy bag fr Maki SquarePatch yesterday!! Super seamstress Xin did this baby within 1 day of my special order and cos we are all easties, I dropped by their headquarters and bought another flat dolly!! Wish it was for myself but nope it was for dear ole Eileen whom I've converted to a makisquarepatch junkie too!! :p

To add to my delight, I received sweet Jes' big box of delight yesterday too!! See the fabulous felt flower pin in the background? I've been eyeing one for the longest time and was so distraught that all had been sold! So imagine my joy when I saw she had sent me one! Isn't she a darling??!!! *swoons* There were also my Ethereal necklace fr her Inspire Bohemian collection which I absolutely adore ~ and a lovely Junquey Lovelie which says "She knows herself" on a vintage picture of a wistful little girl. The funkiest bit is the little wires going thru the flower which lets me add beads to spunk it up further!! But no she had to top it up with a string of beads fr her recent trip in New York! Oh Jes I love you!!!

Last but no least, I picked up a pretty corsage (the swirly bloom behind the Junquey Lovelie) fr Jiaying over tea last night, her stuff' s just getting better and better! She's been busy making corsages for the bridesmaids flowergirls etc for Louis and Lily's wedding this Saturday so yay! Means I've just found someone to do them for me too! heh ~ So nice to be surrounded by talented friends :p Her online shop is in the works so I'm not gonna spoil the surprise. P.S. They make lovely Christmas pressies for gal pals!

Oh what to do what to do ~ all the beautiful things these creative people make just make me want to spend my money!!

Tis the season to be jolly ~

I was just telling Matt how quiet it'd been the last couple of weeks, everyone seemed so busy we seemed to meet up less....how tired and weary and dry I felt working alone at home sometimes... and how much I really wanted to just SEE people!! And now my schedule is packed with gal pal outings, a wedding to attend, a musical and oh just many many things! Suddenly I'm getting to know so many new friends, most of whom are talented crafters and we're just having a blast thinking of new ideas and possible collaborations. I make it a point not to work in bed but there I was last night, frantically jotting down all the ideas in my head before I lose them!

What would you fabulous gals say to a tea party by Chris' Pantry where you can have yummy desserts and tea and shop for Oriental Rose goodies at the same time? It's an idea we're throwing around and just cos it's gonna be Christmas soon! Write to us and let us know!
I'm collecting my orders of cranberry shortbread, lavender sugee and chocolate truffle cookies later this afternoon, drooling just thinking abt it.... check out my reviews later! :p

Just cos it's Christmas, and just cos it's my favourite time of the year, I'll be having a 10% discount on all items in the Kamoe Rose series from now till Dec 8 (which is the last date for shipping before I'm outta here!). I'm still trying to come up with more new pieces before I go a angkor-wat-ing so remember to check back often! (ok this does not apply to you gals who've been smsing your orders after my fastest-fingers-first comment haha)

Meanwhile enjoy the festive air of Christmas and remember to be good!! :)

Weekend of the Talented Friends

This weekend has been nothing short of awe-inspiring as I met up with the most amazing of people and their tenacity and passion for their craft really puts me to shame!

Saturday afternoon was spent at Space Out Cafe for a little tea party held by Weilin's friend Chris who is a fine patissier if I may say! She sells her delicious cookies and cakes online at Chris' Pantry but like me, everything is under construction, so you can see her goodies on her blog instead! We had a taste of her Christmas log cake, chocolate banana cupcake, apple pie and my favourite, Earl Grey cookies. Trust me, they are out of this world! Chris personally handmakes all her pastries from scratch using the finest ingredients and it shows in her pastries. She is now my official wedding baker :)

Tea and chatter on a lazy Saturday afternoon ~ ah that is the life! But wait, there's Sunday too!

Oh, look at what a gorgeous dolly I got at the Maad sunday market! Just got permission fr Xin (the uber-talented crafter & painter of the Maki SquarePatch duo) to use her photo cos everyone knows what a sucky photog I am heh ~ And check this out! My very own one-and-only Makiki flat dolly!! It's wholly handmade, stitched with much love and reconstructed from vintage fabric. And before you think it's a kiddy thing, let me tell you Matt and I have been fighting over who gets hugging rights over this bright and cheery dolly!

Xin makes purses and other non-flat teddies, gingerbread man pins, reconstructed clothes and she's a mixed media artist as well! Her sister Enqi makes lovely vintage and retro jewellery. Their website is still under construction so you can check out their creations on their Flickr album here.

Hmmm... let me think what else I got during my 1hr spending spree.... had a little tiff with hubby which was soon resolved but hey, shopping therapy is still therapy! He had footie, I had shopping. And oh yes, I met a talented glass artist Ling of LingGlass who sells her beautifully soldered fused glass pendants on Etsy. I got a gorgeous blue and orange ring and a beauitful pink pendant from her. Don't have pictures of them yet but soon!!!

Last but not least, I picked up a children's book The Elephant and the Tree written and illustrated by Jin Pyn right near the end. We chatted abt our fave children's poetry writer (Shel Silverstein), abt bookshops that are publishers' nightmares and just books in general! She's a talented writer who was chosen out of 34,000 worldwide applicants to be groomed in the natural history filmaking by Animal Planet. Her first book, The Elephant and the Tree is about the endearing friendship between an Asian elephant and a tree, and 5% of the proceeds from the sale of this book will go into funding elephant welfare projects. I like how aptly she puts her inspiration for the book, that life isn't just about ourselves, is it?

Yes indeed, life is more than about just ourselves! And today, this post, is about the people who make all the difference.

Flights & Fancy - Sold

More bag charms! This funky baby is made up of a wise owl with bling eyes, cool black wing, dove heart and large key charms and more blings ~

This key charm proved to be a hit, and I'm not surprised why. Just love the cool motif! So here's another necklace, this time in beads of neutral browns & yellows so that it looks even more vintage-y! A shorter chain with a swarovski crystal hex makes it all the more special.

Thursday, November 02, 2006
